The volleyball season is coming up at WMS. Tryouts are soon from Monday March 30th to Wednesday April 1st.
Dylan Dwyer, an eighth grader at WMS said he plans on trying out for the boys volleyball team this year. He said it was a fun time being able to play volleyball with his friends in seventh grade. To prepare for the season, he said he will practice his bumping and his spiking, as those are the two skills he struggled with the most.
When he tries out he said that he will focus on serving because it is his strongest attribute. His advice for trying out is, “not to get nervous and to enjoy yourself when you try out.”
Another eighth grader at WMS, Daniel Crowley said he plans to try out for the boys volleyball team. He said it was a good and enjoyable experience playing volleyball in his seventh grade year. It was stated by him that his main goal is to improve his setting this year. He also stated that his main struggle was with bumping the ball while playing.
He said that he’ll focus on having fun during the tryouts. His advice is to try your best if you try out and “make sure to enjoy yourself.”
Alex Dinicola, an eighth grader at WMS also said he aims to try out for the boys volleyball team. He said it was both fun and difficult playing volleyball in his seventh grade year. To prepare for the season he said he will practice more. Additionally, he said he will be taking it seriously without fooling around.
He said that he will try to have an overall good performance with his game when he tries out. His advice is to, “Be calm, take your time, and try your best if you plan on trying out.”
Lily Sofranko, an eighth grade student, said she plans on trying out for the girls volleyball team. She described her experience as positive, but said there was much to be desired when it comes to her game. To prepare for the season she would constantly practice whenever she had the chance. Additionally, she said that her main struggles were receiving serves and consistently serving.
While trying out she stated that she will attempt to be flexible when coached and having an overall good game. Her advice is to “be coachable and flexible” she also said, “try your hardest”.
Mr. Godkin, a history teacher and volleyball coach at WMS, is looking forward to the volleyball season. He mentioned that he expects to see a high amount of effort when participating in tryouts. He also looks for coachability in a person, a player needs to be able to follow directions and replicate what is being taught to them when they are in action.
His advice towards anyone trying out is to “try their best”. He described high effort as being “very important”. Additionally, he said “if someone’s coachable and puts in high effort that they will be a quality performer.”
