Journalism is an elective at WMS that teaches students many important life skills. People often say it’s one of the best classes or their favorite. It involves interviewing people and writing informative articles.
Yamileth Merino is a student who has had the class before, she said, “I think journalism is important if students want to do something similar to Journalism in the future and students can learn different skills.” Journalism helps students develop talking skills and interview skills.
Merino continued to explain how what she learned can be used in the future. She said, “Journalism can be used in the future if students want to do something related to it or it can help students learn talking skills and if students ever get interviewed they’ll know what to do.”
The Journalism teacher, Mr Malmstrom explained why he thinks journalism is so important. Mr Malmstrom said, “It’s the foundation of checks and balances in our country because we have freedom of press. Journalism is important to inform people of what’s happening around them and I would say more importantly it’s a place where we can keep our leaders in check and make sure people aren’t doing things that are illegal.”
Mr Malmstrom said that the most important thing that journalism teaches students is “communication. It also teaches students how to be professional so you’re ready for many situations in life.”
Steven Apollo is an 8th grade student at WMS who has had journalism before. He explained that journalism is important because different people talk while interviewing and “learn different skills like communication and have more confidence.”
Steven Apollo talked about how he liked how students can interview their friends and choose what students work. He really likes Mr Malmstrom as a teacher because he likes talking sports and he likes how he’s always there if students need help.
Yamileth Merino was explaining how if someone hasn’t had journalism. It’s a really good elective because there’s a lot of things you can choose to work on. She talked about how Mr Malmstrom is a good teacher and is always there to help students.
