The National Junior Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students for their achievements and contributions to the community. It is built on five pillars which are scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship.
Recently, the members put these values into action by creating a project called Blessing Bags. By interviewing the NJHS adviser and president, we can gain a deeper understanding about what they have to offer.
NJHS advisor, Ms. McHale introduced what the Blessing Bags are and its motive. The Blessing Bags are considered bags filled with important resources such as blankets or socks for the homeless. She stated, “There’s an increase of a lot of unfortunate people in our community, especially the number of the homeless has risen. So during the winter time, we thought putting together some sort of care package for them would brighten their day.”
In addition, she noted that this idea was intended to emphasize how the members could make a difference in helping others feel appreciated. Ms. McHale backed this up by saying, “I hope it impacted our members to see how we are giving back, especially now it’s going to We Feed Woodbridge, so it’s going to go to our community and families we know. I think this will give them a little comfort and a good feeling that people were thinking about them.”
NJHS president, Alyssa Alvarado shared the significance of the Blessing Bags. She pointed out that this project represented “service” which is one of the pillars of NJHS. It was demonstrated by the members willing to take time out of their day to lend a helping hand to someone.
Furthermore, this activity held personal significance to her as well. She mentioned, “It inspired me to be more caring and blessed that I don’t have to go through what they did.” This shows how the Blessing Bags taught life lessons and brought awareness of the challenges that others face.
In conclusion, the Blessing Bags were a huge success and highlights the value of being involved in the community. This idea not only benefited those in need, but the people who were behind it.
