Peer Leaders is a program run by Mrs. Washington that guides peer leaders to teach lessons to younger grades for 7th-8th graders. The Peer Leaders at WMS discuss the program, the process of applying, and the friendly environment. 

Gabby Tonelli, the president of the 8th graders, explained the requirements for getting into Peer Leaders, “To get into Peer Leaders, you need to fill out an application, then Mrs. Washington will approve it and let you into the program,” she said, “you will also need teacher recommendations and good grades, as well as good behavior, which is very important.” 

Since peer leaders teach lessons both here and in the elementary schools, Tonelli said that she prefers teaching at the elementary level more than here. 

Tonelli gave advice to younger grades who are looking to join peer leaders. She said, “I would definitely say join, it’s a great program, and we have an amazing time teaching. If you like being a role model for other people and setting a good example, it’s a great thing to join.” 

For a follow-up, Hannah Amusa, a member of Peer Leaders, gave words of advice and inspiration for Peer Leaders, “After seeing the Black History Month assembly, this made others realize what impact they could have on others. The interactive parts, acting scenes to show more of a creative side, and the information and historical lessons…” 

Amusa stated that “to be a peer leader, you need to maintain good grades.” Lucky for her, she already was, “This is something to keep in mind when thinking about joining peer leaders. If our grades drop lower than a C, you could risk getting suspended from the program.”

On a positive side, Amusa said the Peer Leaders are a really enjoyable experience, especially the ability to travel to the elementary schools and teach and inspire them. She also said she loves that she gets to interact and meet new people. 

Setting new and positive behavior for the kids younger than her is something that she encourages others to do.
