WMS students have a lot to consider in the next marking period. Not only do they have to keep up with their work, but they will vote for a new student council office board. Voting for Student Council will be held on October 17th.
Ms. Desch, the advisor of the club, said that “Student Council gives the student body the opportunity to speak up on the things they would like to change or improve at our middle school.”
Desch explained what it means to be a leader, “A good leader would be someone who is selfless, who thinks about the bigger picture, and who has everyone’s interest in mind. And is also of course organized”
Mr. Panko, the principal of WMS, explained what he expects from student council members. He said, “I think so, I think you have to be a part, who is going to be one of the elected officials of Student Council. There has to be kind of a higher level of achievement both academically, behaviorally, and also into clubs and activities. But that doesn’t mean if you want to be a part of the Student Council you could just join, but it could be a good example for the 6th graders on how to become those elected officials.”
Mr. Panko also shared his opinions on what makes a good leader, “A good leader first off is good on listening to those around him or her, I think thats important, that they listen to those around, not only the people that are their buddies or friends, but people who may not agree with them on everything about or like them as the same interests.”
Students running for President:
The WMS presidential hopefuls also shared what influenced them to run for student council.
Alyssa Alvarado said she’s running for president because, “I just wanted to be able to inspire people within our school by holding a high role in a club, and I thought student council was the best option.” Her campaign slogan is, “You fall down 7 times, and you get back up 8.”
Arjan Kaur wants to inspire people, “I just wanted to be able to inspire people within our school by holding a high role in a club, and I thought student council was the best option.”
Delaney Fallon said she wants to give each student a voice in WMS, “I believe that every student in WMS deserves a voice in this building, considering they spend the majority of their time here. I also want to be able to give back to my school and community after how much I have enjoyed my time here over the past two years.” Her slogan is, “Together, we can make school something we all actually look forward to.”
Gabrielle Tonelli wants to change our school for the better, “I want to improve our school and make it better for everyone in it. And also people wanted me to.” Her slogan is, “Vote for Gabby.”
Kristopher Dabrowski said he wants to pave the way for students to excel this year, “I want to help make our community and school better and build a foundation for greatness and excellence in our school.”
Michael Feliu wants to be a leader, “I want to be a leader, I want to make a change here at WMS and I also want to try something different, like I’ve never done this before in my life.”
Students running for Vice-President:
Cameron Hammond has a big support system, “I really wanted to show a tribute to the school and be a big part of the school as well as, I feel like a lot of my friends were saying that I should and so I did, and my mom also helped me get on to the track of being vice.”
Hannah Amusa said, “What influenced me is that I want to do more stuff before I leave this school because it’s our last year.”
Students running for Secretary:
Kiley Young said she was greatly encouraged to run for secretary, “I really like the advisor, Ms. Desch and she kind of encouraged me to run because she believed that I was capable of doing it.” Young said the secretary takes notes and she’s good at notes “The secretary keeps minutes at meetings and tracks down information that was brought up at the meetings. So basically note taking, and I think I’m pretty good at note taking.”
Lanique Jenkins has waited for this opportunity for a while, “Something that influenced me to run for secretary was that last year I wanted to join Student Council but, then when I found out that it was only for 8th graders, I was really shocked about it so, when I found out they were doing the president and office things, I was like ‘oh maybe I can run for something’ so I decided to run for secretary.” Jenkins explained that the secretary is the main communication, “So, the secretary’s main role is to keep record of the meeting times or how long the meetings are and they’re the main communication point for the whole Student Council.”
Students running for Treasurer:
Ava Kripatis believes that being treasurer would set her up for future success, “I know that treasurer deals with money and it’s a lot of mathematical and financial stuff, so I thought it would be a good skill to learn for my future. I also just really wanted to help the school out.”
Allison Zuber said she’d be good at the job, “My best friend Gabby, she sort of made me run for it. But, I’m actually really happy I am because I feel like I’d be good at the job.”
