Green thumbs up for the environment

Riley Volpe, Fall Editor

How can we save plastic? What is global warming?  How can we improve the earth but also improve living? What lessons can we learn from Mother Nature? These are questions that are extremely important, but often ignored.  As it turns out, my aunt, Jennifer Viola, is an avid volunteer for environmental causes. She responds to these questions by stating, “We can learn a lot from nature, like plants, food, bodies, healing, keeping clean, and in many other ways.”

Increase In Forest Fires:

People need to care about forest fires for more reasons than the obvious.  Forests also help the ozone layer, increasing moisture that comes back down from the clouds.  My father, Phillip Volpe, explained, “The more logging we do the more we are taking from clean, and fresh air from clouds, and moisture.” What we can do to help prevent forest fires is to have tree farms so we can only cut down those trees for paper and wood.  We also need to make sure that we don’t have dry forests either. We can prevent dry forests from planting trees for regular forests.

Global Warming:

Global Warming is a controversial topic.  Mr. Blackmore, science teacher at WMS, said, “A Lot of people think that global warming is a negative, and I get it yes a warmer world is challenging but with every challenge, becomes opportunities for jobs, and real world problems.” Global warming is when a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere.  Global warming happens when people put things like gas, or water vapor that is chemical used plain bad chemicals you put in the air. Global warming can be scary at times, but it’s not always a good thing , and not always a bad thing. Global warming can help the seasons change and like Mr. Blackmore was saying, “It can help with job opportunities.’’ Global warming is not a good mix to have with air pollution. If we want to somewhat help the global warming and the o-zone, we should switch gas and bad fumes of the earth with plants and vegetables.

Plastic and Pollution:

The plastic problem is always a problem, and so is pollution. Plastic always ends up in a landfill or an ocean and pollution is always bad for us and the o-zone..  “We can save plastic by recycling what we have and disposing of it in the proper way.”- my mother Catherine Volpe. We really should save plastic because we need to save the earth from pollution population. We can also make sure that the garbage doesn’t get thrown in the ocean, and can make all of plastic, glass, paper, fluff for pillows, and toys. We need to use garbage like food for fuel.

The Little Things:

If you want to help, you should do beach and forest cleanups. You can also recycle better. We can also switch to tote bags for shopping, and make all things organic or just not have any bad things in it like pesticides. If you want to continue to eat meat,  we need to protect all animals and insects that we need! But we need to save all the animals to also help the earth.

Every little thing helps so much. If you want to help recycle and help the earth, you can donate to good foundations like 4ocean, or the U.S. forest service and WWF. You can also help regular animal centers for pets, and donate to zoos. “It can teach us to be more healthy and clean.”- Mia Gillooly Girl Scout. The Girl Scouts are knowledgeable of this because they do beach cleanups and always help the environment as we should. Now get your butt of your couch and go do a little something for Mother Nature!
