The Met Gala: a look into the biggest social event of the year

The Met Gala is one of the biggest events in New York City, lasting one night out of the year, celebrities from all over show out their best outfits to fit the years theme. The Met Gala or the official name the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, brings all the most famous and wealthy people together to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, while also having small donations to other charities.
The Numbers
The Met Gala has over 550+ attendees per year making it one of the largest events in the City. Even though mostly celebrities go your “average” person can buy a general admissions ticket for just a “small” fee of $30,000, though if you want to go with multiple people you can buy a table for $275,000. Celebrities are usually not the ones who have to pay the costs with the designers who dress them paying for everything the average funds raised at the met gala are just over 12 million dollars. The first met gala was held in 1948 and tickets were only $50 dollars and has been going on for 73 years.
History
The founder Eleanor Lambert was a fashion publicists who was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1903. She attended the John Herron School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago to study fashion. After school she moved to new York City not knowing she would become the founder of New York fashion week , the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the Met Gala, and the International Best Dressed List. The first Met Gala with a theme was in 1971 with a fashion plate theme.
Top 3 outfits at the 2019 Met Gala
The celebrity that came best dressed was Josephine Skriver in her floral printed ruffled dress, a long tan and floral printed train,finished off with the same floral printed design on her knee high boots. She also sported a gorgeous floral headpiece. She wore Jonathan Simkhai with Wendy Yue jewelry.
Second best was, Victoria Secret Model, Candice Swanepoel. Candice wore a gorgeous blue dress covered in over 220.00 swarovski crystals. The dress had a beautiful blue ruffled train, and a long slit down the side of the dress. She wore Prabal Gurung with Giuseppe Zanotti heels.
Third best were the Jenner sisters Kendall and Kylie. Kendall came in a gorgeous bright orange dress with faux feathers,and kylie came in a lavender mermaid like dress with a furry shall and fur bottom on the dress. Kylie donned a stunning lavender purple wig matching her dress.
Yes, a lot of celebrities get backlash for paying an “absurd” amount of money to attend this event, however, they do give a lot back to the MET and other charities while at this event. Though it may seem like this event is just a fashion show, it was started on the premise of giving back to the community and it still holds true today.

Hey Jennah,
It’s Morgan I kind of found your article on the Met Galla pretty interesting. Especially since I love fashion and watch the Met Gala every year. And personally my favorite from 2019 was Lady Gaga’s outfit and the beautiful hot pink gown she wore.
