A Crystal and a Stumbling Turtle By: Ashley Toloka

Fizz, burble, kaboom! These were typical sounds for Crystal, the magic cat familiar, when she is leaving her owner’s tower, towards her favorite sleeping rock near Newt Pond road. She is a five year old orange tabby with black tipped paws and a tail, brown outer eyes, a white under belly, weighing about a measly nine pounds. Luke, her wizarding owner, found her in a box one day while looking for toad warts beside the road. He named the cat, Crystal because of her glassy light blue pupils that looked like crystal when she dilates them.
Crystal turns around to see Luke’s Castle engulfed in pink smoke from a miscalculated dose of bubble gum extract. She thinks nothing of it and continues to the pond. As she walks Crystal hears an annoying croaking toad on the side of the road to her left.
“Hey George, how are you today in this morning?” said Crystal with a menacing smile.
George looked at her and started sweating, “Good…bye,” he managed to squeak out nervously.
Crystal stared deeply into the toad’s eyes, he tried to move away from her gaze although it was too late, she already dilated her pupils.
“Stop croaking for at least twelve hours!” she commanded.
And so the toad hopped away trying to scream, however nothing came out. Crystal has the power of hypnosis, every time she get annoyed, embarrasses herself, or get threatened by some predator she dilates her pupils.
While walking, Crystal passed multiple beautiful flowers and fronds; she notices even more annoying frogs croaking on dark green lilly pads. Crystal decided it was too much trouble to hypnotize them all, so she ignored them and the sound turned to drowning. The closer she gets towards her favorite lake, the more squishy soothing brown mud touched her delight at paws. You would think a proud familiar, would hate being muddy, although Crystal loves nature in all its disgusting beauty. A familiar is a creature that helps a wizard or witch with magic, usually they’re self righteous and tend to act like they are better than any other plan animal.
She spots a huge shining black rock on the edge of the pond, and lifts her tail in triumph. Crystal curls up into a ball on the smooth cold damp rock with the wind blowing calmly through her fur. The clouds in the sky are perfectly aligned, covering the sun’s harmful rays from directly attacking Crystal. She slowly fell into a peaceful sleep to the sound of buzzing of insects, the scent of fresh flowers, and swampy air, with a hint of manure. Crystal could have slept the whole day except that she was woken up by the water ripples coming towards her.
A turtle emerges from the pond’s dense waters onto a rock besides Crystal, shaking extra water inside his shell which lands right on Crystal’s white whiskers, making her shiver from its cold touch.
“Hey Crystal. Oh, you’re asleep. Sorry. Did I wake you?” asked Blaze the turtle a little too late. He had already woken her up. Nevertheless, he decides to lay right next to her, regardless.
Blaze is Crystal’s best friend, a ten year old box turtle with a red strip starting at his red eyes running down his neck. He also has a rugged black shell with grayish-green skin and lived on the other side of Newt Toad Road Pond. Crystal liked Blaze because he is the only one she never hypnotized into doing something without his consent, she never needed to. Blaze is friends with crystal because she is quirky like him and mostly quiet.
“You know today my whole family argued over where we would be staying in winter time since our old barrow was…… Hey. Are you even listening?” he saw her ear twitch.
Trying not to annoy her, he kept quiet, and got up to drink some water. Crystal joined him. The cold swamp water was refreshing to her parched throat.
Blaze looked up slightly and saw a toad walling, but he wasn’t making a sound.
“You silenced george didn’t you?” said Blaze in a clam disappointed tone.
“So,” added Crystal returning to her sleep position on the rock.
“How long did you make him not be able to sleep?”
“Twelve hours, Now let me go back to sleep Blaze,” Crystal groaned half-asleep.
Blaze looked in her very soul “Crystal.”
She didn’t want to open her eyes, Blaze was the kind of animal that can make you feel bad without yelling.
She stood up, “Well At least I’m good at using my gift unlike you who can barely keep his head up in the water!”
Completely calm Blaze spoke, “Crystal you can’t go around erasing people’s memories like they’re a ball of yarn. What if it was me?” he gulped, worried about her answer.
Crystal’s tail sprang up like an antenna. She never toys with other people’s memories, no matter how mad she gets.
“If I could protect myself from other animals I would never!” she said mumbling over forming tears.
Blaze exhaled with relief under his breath. Crystal dared to look into her disappointing friend’s eyes with pure rage, she accidently dilated her pupils to look like real crystal. Blaze’s face gone white.
“Blaze forget everything…” “(..that happened today)”, Crystal was about to finish her sentence when she saw how pale he was.
She turned her head, “Blaze. Are you okay? Blaze!” yelled Crystal waving her paw in front of his blank red eyes.
A moment passed before she know what she done. The air itself was silent. A single tear dropped from her whisker moving toward the pond across the pond landing with a, droop sound, sending ripples throughout the water.
“No. No. NOOO!”
Blaze forget everything….blaze forget everything….forget everything….everything, these words echoed inside her head as she created waterfalls pouring liters into the pond. Crystal runs in circles frantically thinking up a solution. Frazzled, crystal bites her tail to calm herself. She falls to the ground with her paws on her head, sobbing.
“Uh, are you alright?” Crystal looked up and saw Blaze.
“Good his brain is still functioning” she thought to herself. She got up, “Yeah, I’m good. how about you, Blaze?”
“Blaze? Is that my name? I can’t remember, actually I can’t remember anything. Do you know what happened…uhhhh”
“It’s Crystal, and I accidentally erased your memory. Sorry,” It hurt more to say it out loud than in her head.”
She was ready for a outrage scream, although all she got was a sigh than a big goofy smile. Crystal turns her head in confusing.
“Okay, I don’t know how to respond to this. However if I lost my memory and you are still here when you did it, that means you trying to fix it right?”
She nods slightly. With a smile as silly as Blaze’s Crystal couldn’t help but smile as well. Although she has an ominous feeling that he is furious with her.
Blaze begins to look around to the new forgotten world around him. His mouth is wide open when he saw flies, frogs, and other flowers around the pond. Blaze makes the craziest suggestion to get his memory back. He asks questions about everything about Newt Toad Road Pond.
“Hey what’s that!” asked a curious blaze pointing his stubby foot towards Luke’s tower.
A light bulb went off in Crystal’s head. Luke, why didn’t she think of it before. He probably has at least one Reverse Potion in his lab. She asks Blaze to give her ride to the tower for a cure for his memory. He agrees and Crystal leaps onto his rugged pentagonal shell and heads towards her home. “At least some things don’t change.” thought Crystal with relief laying on his rugged shell.
Half way there Crystal takes a nap and by the time she gets to the tower it’s pitch black. They sneak through the cat door and up the stairs until they reach a door that reads: Potion lab and ingredients. She pushes the large oak door slowly, with her nose making it slightly creaking noise.
The Room is pitch black for a few seconds, until her eyes adjust to the darkness. Because of Luke’s O.C.D, all they see is Books, brewing stand, potions and an ink pen all labeled is a designated area or self. The potion that they needed was in one of the redwood drawers with rose gold handles. She took the first steps,
“Ouch!” she yelped before covering her own mouth. Her cat eyes start to adjust more to the dark room. There were splinters covering the dark oak floor like a landmine. A few weeks before she warned Luke about this exact situation, except he couldn’t understand her.
Crystal tried to warn Blaze but, he already began to explore the room. She crocks her head side ways, “I guess his reptile feet don’t get hurt by just by little splinters, unlike my soft grass-made paws.” she though inside her head. She took another step, this time being careful not to damage her paws. The wooden boards made the loudest cracking sound in the almost silent castle.
Blaze gravitated towards a large drawer on the lowest level that read, Blaze’s and Crystal’s Favorite snacks. He opened the unlocked compartment and climbed in. Crystal grunted in satisfaction that this will keep busy for a while, when she looks for the potion. Her ear twitches, she hears the unforgettable sound of open packages of candy salmon and flounder. She stops herself in her own tracks with disappointment, Blaze never ate any of her snacks only his, the jawbreakers and Luke’s famous magic-grown cabbage.
All of a sudden a loud orge cry sound made Crystal jump causing her to get five total splinters in both back and front paws. She lowered her arched back and tail, it was just Luke and his annoying snoring. Blaze not knowing, perches his head out side of the drawer with sugary goodness covering his red streak. This is good new for Crystal because this means he is fast asleep.
“Brewing stand…activate!” yells Luke in his bed room, although to Blaze’s turtle ears two floors down, it sounds more like a whisper.
With the accidental word command, the room went into an uproar. The liquids fizzed like crazy, bubbling over. Smells of apple cinnamon and other great smells filled the tower along with an unidentified smell that was utterly disgusting. The torches lit up the room revealing everything. Blaze’s and Crystal’s eyes stung with the burst of light in the room unable to adjust to the newly light conditions quick enough.
She thought about how dangerous it was to unpurposely say a word spell, like her hypnotizing eyes. Her tail hit the floor, as the idea of Blaze never forgiving her shutters Crystal to the bone. “What if he doesn’t forgive me for my stupidity” this thought haunts her as she looks at Blaze, now looking up at a jar of special flies about ten feet up.
She proceeds to take out the splinters with her teeth, looking at the door cautiously for Luke to come storming in, screaming. In the corner of her eye she notice a desk right by the door with a label on the side: Rare complicated potions A-Z.
“Jackpot,” she mutters.
Luckily, when she turns to the left she saw a polished broom stick hanging on the wall for cleaning. She scratches the broom handle to tilts it towards the desk. She then jumps on top of the broom head. If Crystal was comparing the floor and broom head, the floor was white puffy clouds compared to what she was standing on now. When she got up to redwood desk there was an open book about burping allowed with a mini draw in the far corner. She walks over the compartments over the Book of Burping and classic pranks. The drawers in the corner had letters on them. Crystal then skims her paw until she gets to the self with “QRS” on it. She opens it and takes the one and only Reverse Potion there was. The baby bottom smooth bottle was not a great item to hold if your paws are soft. While holding it, Crystal stares into a fizzing liquid and sees Blaze’s eyes looking angry as ever. It didn’t help that the redness of his eyes gave them an evil vibe. She wonders if it would be better if he never regains his memories.
She finally decides it better to hold the purple concoction in her mouth, heading down the Broom stick.
Crash!! The sound of glass breaking brushes in Crystal’s eardrum.
Blaze dropped the jar of insects. Crystal’s eyes widen, Blaze had somehow opened all the drawers leading to the top, like a poor constructed staircase in order to reach the jar. However the act of opening it, the jar rolls and falls on the floor. Dropping multiple ingredients, plus a swarm of buzzing flies, on to the floor making the once dirt speck free room to a trash heap.
“Oh man if Luke saw thh…” Crystal’s thought is interrupted by the slamming of a large wooden door and a ticked off lobster, which made her drop the bottle from her bite. It was luke, he had awoke from the noise of the bustling room. She looks down to wear her friends memories lay stained on the splintering wood. Her heart sank. Blaze with never forgive her. Blaze couldn’t even try if he wants to because his very personality was contained inside the beaker.
I’ll let you image a person with major O.C.D come into a clean room to find the room lit, precious/rare ingredients on the floor, flies flying on beakers, a candy-lined-mouth turtle on top of the tall self, brewers opened to form a staircase, and right in front of him; his cat that just dropped a hard to make potion, getting his muddy paws all over his prized broom. Yeah exactly.
Blaze and Crystal found themselves back at their favorite rock after being scowled and kicked out by Rage-infused young Wizard. Blaze lay asleep as Crystal is forced to conceive negativity.
“It’s over my calm smart Blaze is gone and he is never coming back. The only thing left is this playful sibling turtle that only resemble blase.”
“You know I’m still the Blaze you know.” said Blade in his regular peaceful voice, redding her thoughts as always.
Crystal cleared her throat, “I knew that it’s just…” she gave a sigh, “Do you hate.” she sat next to blaze.
“I’m still me, I need time to make more memories, that’s all. So what if you failed to get the potion because of that monster, at least you did something. Just for that I don’t hate you.”
“Hey blaze.”
He gave a slight yawn, “what?”
“Are we still friends?’
“Yeah, of course” he fell into a slumber.
Crystal eyes shimmering from the sun light, she gave out a tiny smile, blushing.
