Smoky Quartz is a glossy, translucent gemstone that gets its signature “smoky” color from natural irradiation and trace amounts of aluminum within its silicon dioxide structure. Ranging in color from a pale, tea like tan to a dense, near opaque black. This mineral is prized by collectors for its glass-like shine and structural resilience. Smoky Quartz often forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, such as granite pegmatites and hydrothermal veins, when rock crystals are exposed to natural radiation from surrounding minerals. This radiation alters the crystals framework by displacing electrons.
