Nov.13, 1927 -The Holland Tunnel opens

The tunnel runs under the Hudson River. New Jersey opened to traffic the week before, during midnight on November 13. On that first day of the opening 51,694 vehicles traveled through the tunnel. President Coolidge opened the tunnel for a way of transportation from his Yacht. The length was 8558 ft. and the cost 3.4 billion dollars in today’s money.

Opening the tunnel was a dangerous idea because trucks and cars give out carbon monoxide. People from different university came together and came up with an idea to use large vents to bring oxygen in and get rid of carbon monoxide.
