October 16th marks the beginning of Woodbridge Middle School’s cheerleading team tryouts, led by ebullient Coach Duffy, Coach Liastro and Coach Szoke.

This four day process begins with learning a certain routine, created by the coaches. Then after learning it, the prospective cheerleaders are required to perform it.

The secret behind the team’s success is the strong camaraderie between the two coaches. Coach Duffy states that the coaches are “Yin and Yang;” their differences make their partnership strong.

This year, Coach Duffy and Coach Liastro are joined by new teacher, Ms. Szoke. Coach Szoke explained that she cheered throughout high school and college and knew she wanted to help out “in any way I could.”

Although this is only the second year cheerleading has been implemented in our school, it certainly has a positive impact. The coaches explain that it boosts student morale, and encourages others to take part in supporting their teams. Coach Duffy says, “It helps Woodbridge Middle come alive.”

Not only does it impact our school community, but it plays a substantial role in the lives of the cheerleaders. According to Gianna Benicaso, one of the eighth graders trying out, states cheerleading is “a whole different world.”

The two coaches believe that cheerleading is not just about flexibility. The ideal cheerleader has school spirit, “vibrancy”, and “isn’t afraid to be themselves.” Coach Szoke hopes to show the girls that “they are representatives of Woodbridge Middle, and people look up to them.”

Coach Liastro reveals that together they hope to “build on what we created last year.” This season includes a whole new routine, filled with more tumbles and stunts than ever before.

Good luck cheerleaders!
