This spring, the WMS girls’ volleyball team advanced to the finals.
The Woodbridge Middle School girls’ volleyball team played Colonia on May 22. Woodbridge faced challenges all season, from new players to developing effective communication on the court.
One key theme for the season was energy: BellaSofia Ortiz expressed how energy levels in a game affect her performance, “Let’s say if nobody is in the stands, my team is going to cheer for everyone on the court at the time, but it’s not that hype. For example, the [regular season] Colonia game. It was so hype and it pushed us to do well and win that game.”
Ortiz also talked about how she encourages her teammates, “So, when my teammates cheer, and even when I cheer because it is vice versa, we encourage the people on the court, even if they make a mistake, it’s alright, like you got this, let’s go. And I feel like sportsmanship helps us bring in the win.”
Coach Traschetti talked about how she helps her team improve and get better. She said, “I just picture them doing their best, and I picture them winning, and I tell them that they’re capable of that. I also watch videos to try to get some more ideas.”
Ortiz offered some advice for people interested in trying out next year, “You just have to focus, don’t lose faith, and keep your head in the game.”
Traschetti also explained how she prepared her athletes for a big game like the championship, “I encourage them to communicate with each other, hydrate, eat the right foods, positive attitude, and give it their all.”
Aubrey Petruccelli, a returning 8th grader, advised the upcoming 7th and 8th graders, “Practice before tryouts and just be as loud as possible because you might make the team based on energy.”
Great season, Warriors.
