Mr.Blackmore’s river science project at WMS with students took place this March, of 2025.
The river project is a science activity at WMS where a student builds a river and adds water to see what happens. This gives students a hands-on experience.
Mr.Blackmore, a science teacher at WMS, explained his favorite moment from the project, “When I was a kid, I was an explorer,I would go to lakes and look and flip over the rocks and picked up the salamanders and crawfish that life experience was real and it made this emotional connection to me as a kid and I see so many students that come into school and they are ‘not fulfilled’ and ‘bored’ and play these ‘video games’ and they don’t want to use their imagination and they don’t realize that you are learning about stuff that you can spend the rest of your life going an exploring and that’s what i’m trying to bring to the students.”
Mr.Blackmore spoke on his best reactions from students or teachers, “I love when people walk by and aren’t even part of the class or project and they ask ‘What is that?’”
Blackmore also explained the curves in rivers and related it to middle schoolers saying, “It’s hard getting the curves in the rocks and middle schoolers are like rocks, they think they know everything but once you get older you learn new things and the river of life starts to flow.”
Mason Wicinsky, a seventh grade student at WMS spoke to people who have never done the project saying, “Have fun with it and enjoy it while it lasts.”
Mason Wicinsky said if he could do this project with any scientist he would choose Bill Nye or Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Wicinsky explained how excited he was, “Since I already had him last year I was very excited about being able to just do it again and see all the new people’s reaction.”
