1910 – Elizabeth Blackwell dies of a stroke

On this day in history on May 31, 1910, physician Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to ever receive a medical degree in the United States and the UK Medical Register, died of a stroke in Hastings, United Kingdom.

Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821 in Bristol, United Kingdom. She and her family eventually moved to the United States, where Blackwell, her two sisters, and mother worked as educators after the death of their father.

As Blackwell entered her mid-20s she discovered inspiration to become a doctor through a friend, who was suffering from an illness and felt more comfortable going to a female physician then a male physician. Though women at the time were not deemed worthy of entering a medical field, Blackwell was determined to help her friend. She studied with doctors and became accepted into Geneva Medical College in 1847, graduating in 1849 as the first woman as a doctor of medicine.

The doctor soon began to give hope to the world, opening clinics and a medical school for women in the United States. Blackwell then moved back to England, where she suffered from a stroke and died in her home on May 31, 1910. She still remains as an important figure in history, and is an inspiration to women everywhere.
