The Big Brothers and Big Sisters program has returned to WMS with a new advisor, Mr. Ahmed, a language arts teacher.
Mr. Ahmed commented on the importance of the program. He said, “We actually meet twice a month. Big brothers and big sisters organization that values mentorship. So mentorship is basically someone who is older than you, is a bit more experienced in the field that you want to be in, and they give you advice on what you want to go or project to where you want to be in. So big brothers and big sisters mainly focus on that.”
They offer a lot at Big Brothers and Big Sisters. For instance, they offer help from a Big Brother and/or Big Sister, the High schoolers from the Woodbridge Barrons.
They help in clubs similar to the ones Woodbridge Middle Schoolers participate in. WMS students would be paired with a Big Brother who has already done the Club or is on a higher level of the club. Bonding activities are one of the first activities that students partake in throughout the year.
“So it’s all about teamwork at the end of the day all the activities are based off saying if you could do stuff by yourself, Which in most cases you cannot and then in other situations, see how you work with on a team,” said Mr. Ahmed.
High schoolers can also preview what’s to come in high schools, such as showing them a skill they could learn later. They mostly give advice and help you set goals, good goals that can help you succeed in life. They could give you a preview of what type of responsibility you’d pick.
One of his students really likes some of their activities, such as the Marshmallow House. They have to build a house out of marshmallows, toothpicks, and uncooked spaghetti. Another student commented, “In Big Brothers and Big sisters, We build our relationship with the people that we are with.”
