In December WMS hosted a ‘White Out’ event in the gym for the WMS Community to support the basketball players, and cheerleaders, and raise money for school activities.
Mrs. Douglas, an 8th grade language arts teacher and cheer coach, helped organize the event. She explained that it provided more advertising for the game, saying, “I think that the students were able to get excited cause there was more school spirit surrounding it the teachers, students, cheerleaders, and basketball teams wearing the shirts for the whiteout out so I think it was the advertising that made it more exciting.”
Mrs. Douglas also added that all the money raised for the event goes back into the school for future events.
Braylon Holmon, a WMS student council member, explained how this event came into play. He said, “I am a longtime Penn State fan and as some may know Penn State does the whiteouts so that’s where I got the idea from.”
Another student at WMS, Alexander Green, a basketball player, talked about how different the crowd was. He said, “Yeah, because during the regular games nobody cheers, but at the whiteout game everybody was cheering.” Expressing how much support there was in the crowd.
Patrick Grogan, another player on the team, echoed Alex’s sentiment. He said, “There were a lot more people, everyone was super hype, every turnover the defense got and every shot the crowd was pumping.”
Mrs. Liastro, an 8th grade world history teacher at WMS as well as a cheer coach at WMS, stated who came up with how this event would be fundraised, “It was actually the idea of basketball players to create shirts to sell.”
She also expressed her excitement at the event, saying, “I think the whiteout to support our team was exciting and the number of people seeing the shirts around the school.”
