WMS 8th graders Mia Muilenburg and Abygale Faughnan are G&T creative writing students who present some root information about this year’s gifted and talented program at WMS.
The students in G&T meet “every other Thursday” according to Muilenburg. So every other Thursday when they get there Muilenburg stated, “…we just sit there and talk about how we are doing, what we have done the week we are not seeing each other. So we just sit there and socialize for about 30 minutes. Then, the first things we do is like 2 – 3 plays.”
While G&T is an opportunity-building program, it also comes with its fair share of challenges and struggles for students. Faughnan stated, “You have to make sure you can control your workload.” She says that maintaining G&T work with schoolwork can be a bit challenging.
G&T presents many opportunities for students who enjoy immersing themselves in any writing performance. Muilenburg commented, “…it gives you a lot of opportunities…We also get chances that [other] students can’t do.”
In G&T, there are many opportunities to go on trips and visit theaters (theater is a form of creative writing). Faughnan said, “In 6th grade, we saw Romeo and Juliet and last year we saw Love’s Labour’s Lost.” Faughnan also mentions how this year they will be seeing a Shakespeare play later in the year.
G&T Creative Writing is a program that challenges students to use their creativity and passion to create writing pieces, but it comes with all sorts of benefits that can help in the future.
