We are Ashley and Malaiyah from The Warrior Messenger and throughout this week we some of the students and staff at WMS about how music affects their mental health.
Mr.O’Halloran, WMS’ vice principal said, “I don’t think there’s a best music type because you’re asking about one thing and Eliminating everything else. I think all music has it’s positives. There’s all different genres out there, just like there are different people and everyone has different interests so the great thing about music is that there is something out there for everyone.”
O’Halloran also stated how music helps him. He said, “Music helps me because it creates a distraction. I get to listen to something rather then focus on whatever is stressing me out like my lovely seventh grade students.”
Not only did Mr O’Halloran have an opinion about music, but 7th grade math teacher Mrs. Burke stated, “Oh my gosh I totally agree. If I’m not at work I listen to music literally all the time. It helps my drive, it makes everything more peaceful. I listen to it when I cook dinner so I could dance around and cook. I love music.”
We then asked 6th grader Emanuel Orrego on his opinion on music he said, “Music helps me with stress.” He also stated that R&B is his favorite genre which many other students also said too.
7th grader, Jeremiah Cherry, said, “Music helps me because I can just calm down when I listen to it.”
7th grader Joel Diaz De la Rosa explained why he thinks people listen to music. Diaz replied, “I think people listen to music to catch a vibe.”
8th grader Kamia Jones stated, “I think people listen to music because if they don’t have anything to do they would listen to music and it also helps them do stuff faster.” Another 8th grader Maria Flores emphasized the importance of music, “I dont know music is music you can’t live without it.”
We realized that music isn’t just a vibe and a nice tune. Music helps people with their mental health. Music can help you if you are feeling sad. Music is therapy.
