The counselors at WMS hosted a Spirit Week last week as an effort to spread awareness about anti-bullying.
Mrs.Torella, a counselor at Woodbridge Middle School, planned a spirit week and said that spirit week started in 2017 at WMS and was created by the New Jersey Legislation in 2011. Ms.Torrella also said that she had “planned it, and got help from Mrs. Valente, and [her] intern.”
Mrs.Valente, another counselor at Woodbridge Middle School, said that we should have Spirit Week “4 times throughout the year, one for each season so we could switch things up a little.”
Mrs.Valente also commented that she preferred the name Week of Respect because “it reminds students to be respectful.”
Mrs. Acheson, the student assistant counselor (SAC) who had been working at Woodbridge Middle School for her second year said “that the meaning of Spirit Week is to advocate for appropriate behavior and have a little bit of fun while making sure we have safeguards to protect students from bullying and more.”
She also said, “I think in the future, students should vote on how they feel about Spirit Week. I think that as we grow as a school and have appropriate behavior, we could do more things in regards to spirit week and not just wearing crazy socks.”
Spirit Week has a different meaning every time. Though, this Spirit Week is about representing “Anti-bullying” because last year there was a lot of violence and bullying throughout the school year.
Mrs.Acheson wanted to add her favorite theme from Spirit Week was crazy socks. She specifically said, “I’m going to have to go with crazy socks, I could wear crazy socks every day.”
