The WMS Boys basketball team is preparing for the upcoming season. Tryouts begin October 21, 22, and 23.
Mr. Salinas, the coach of the boys basketball team, explained what students need to do to make the team. Salinas said, “The first thing students need to do is have a physical form completed with the office. If you don’t have a physical form then you can’t participate in tryouts. The second thing you need to do is let your parents know exactly what the information on the tryouts is.”
Salinas also said the tryouts will be at 7.00 am October 21, 22, and 23. At the end of the tryouts, coaches will make the evaluation and see how many students are going to be part of the boys basketball team for the 2024-2025 season.
Salinas also explained why he prefers attitude over skill. Salinas said, “ Attitude will beat skill. It is preferable , and any coach would tell you that the attitude a player has is more important than the skill the player has. Attitude is always going to be something that will be a priority for any player on the team. To be able to collaborate and provide assistance to their teammates and to the overall goal of what the team wants to do.”
Not only does the coach have to prepare, but players from last season have to prepare as well. Bryson Nelson, an 8th grade student that played last year said, “Just focus on school and everything will follow. But what a lot of teachers and coaches told me ‘be a student athlete’, student comes first.”
Nelson also said that he wants to win WMS a championship, Nelson said, “I want to join the basketball team because I feel like I can bring the school a championship. When I make the team I hope to bring the school a championship.”
Nelson said that before a game he “first practiced stretching and since I am a spiritual person I pray to god for him to give me strength and to help me win the game and let my teammates know that I got their back and they got mine.”
Salinas also said, “This upcoming basketball season is going to be exciting, we expect our student body to be very engaged and participate in the games. To come and support our boys basketball team.”
