The journalism class of fall 2024 is off to a great start.
Mr. Malmstrom, a Language Arts teacher and also a teacher for journalism, decided to bring journalism to the middle school, “Eight years ago there was the idea that teachers had to write a newsletter to inform parents what was happening in school and I thought it would be cooler if students did it. So a long time ago I learned they had journalism in the high school and so I wrote the curriculum and they approved it to bring it to the middle school.”
Jadrian Rodriguez, a student at WMS and a part-time journalist, likes this class because “you get creative freedom,” Rodrigeuz said he can only use three words to describe how much he enjoys this class: “I Love It!”
Mr. Malmstrom was asked what the most popular class visited by students is and his response was, “That’s an interesting question there is no most popular class, I mean the gym is a great place to go because that’s where most kids are, but the thing I love about this class is that students go everywhere, there’s no real most popular class.”
Mr. Malmstrom said he looks for “a student who is self-motivated, likes helping others, and people who are curious about the world” in a journalist.
Students have become increasingly interested in journalism and Malmstrom said it is because of freedom, “Number one is the ability to choose what they write about I think that’s huge and I think you become a better writer when you are passionate about what you are writing about, the second thing I think people like is freedom, and weirdly, I think even though you have freedom there is some strictness to it and some students excel with that.”
