Heroes and Side Kicks save the day
Last Thursday WMS students represented Woodbridge Middle at Mawbey Street School and Ross Street School by talking to them about how to excel as a student.
They were trained before going to talk to them. Then, the next week they went to talk to them at 9:15 am. They had three different visits. For the first time, they talked about middle school. The second time they talked, it was about bullying, and the third time, they talked about drugs and alcohol.
The heroes’ main motivation is that they want the sidekicks of elementary school to be prepared for middle school and what it means to be a middle-schooler. In order to be prepared, the elementary school students need a middle schooler’s experience to know what it is like today in middle school.
Emily Christie, a hero, said, “ It’s nice interacting with the kids, and teaching them about middle school and bullying.” Christie says they are “curious” about middle school, and how the bullies can be “intimidating”.
Diego Rolon explains how he felt about the program, he says that he feels “noble and titled”, “I’m glad they are doing this so kids have role models; growing up I didn’t have any role models for middle school.¨
Alivia Toliver says, “I love it, itś really good and teachers are understanding.¨ She feels that she was chosen for a reason. Her saying is, “Just try, because you will never know until you try.¨
Julia Chepel says, “Its amazing to teach kids serious things in a fun way.” She wants them to be great kids and not do anything bad. She says the thing that makes her a great hero is cheer. She is ¨happy that they made this program for kids.”
Dayuan Payne says he is “motivational.” He thinks he is doing something right. His advice is, “Stay positive no matter what the situation is.”
The school counselors, Ms. Valente and Ms Torrella, in Woodbridge Middle said, ¨It’s excellent. It’s wonderful to talk to the kids so they want be left in the dark.” They also say ¨more people want to join the program.¨
Congrats to everyone who has made a difference in the community !
