The WMS girls’ Cross Country team prepares for the Meet of Champions at Merrill Park, on May 30th.

The Meet of Champions is tomorrow! After nonstop weekly practices, the Ladies’ Cross Country is ready to take on the District Cross Country Championship.

Only the top 7 runners can participate in the final meet. These will be the runners with the best time and stamina.  The top 7 runners for the meet are Constanza D, Aubrey R, Delaney F, Hannah A, Lily K, Bobbi Jo T, and Hannelore G.

Losing time in cross country is not as easy as it seems. It takes lots of improvement and practice.

Natalie Philpot from the cross country team  said, “To get myself to get to the finish line I tell myself that at the end I can sit down.”

The coach, Mr. Olvesen said,  “As far as improvement is concerned every girl on the team has increased their performance… specific times, percentages, exact numbers, if I had to average it I’d probably say somewhere between 30 seconds to a minute.”

Regarding what the practices are like, Mr. Olvesen said, “Practices start with a warm-up and a stretch followed by that day’s workout, we like to run one day short, one day long throughout the week. Then depending on how we’re feeling we do another long or another type of sprint workout.”

While these girls work hard while running a great distance, it does not come easy, “Keeping up with my breathing,” Philpot said is her biggest challenge while running.

Best of luck to the ladies’ Cross Country team. Go, Warriors!
