These giant crab species can grow up to a leg span of 15 feet! Some people think of them as spiders because of their long legs. They can live up to 100 years old and are the largest known living arthropod. These Japanese crabs are members of the family called the “decorator crabs”. They can be found in the Pacific Ocean around Japan. They are omnivores and eat plants such as algae, and animals like mollusks. Male crabs are larger than female crabs. Most of the time the Japanese Spider Crab is found on the seabed in holes in the floor. I hope I don’t randomly see a Japanese Spider Crab one day, because if I do, I am running far away.
