How does what students wear impact their school day?
Jan 9, 2023
Many students feel that the dress code this year is overly enforced being that just last year we could wear most things. Coming out of covid, many students and teachers would wear what they want to their work or school environment, seeing that on Zoom no one can notice it. The transition has been difficult for students that want to continue wearing clothes like pajama pants.
WHEN YOU COME TO SCHOOL DO YOU PREFER STYLE OR COMFORT
8th grade Math teacher, Mr.Maneri, said he prefers to be comfy. He said this because “If I’m comfy then I feel better about my day and my students can benefit from me when I’m in a good mood.”
7th grader, Bobbijo Timinski, explained that “you’re here for a long time[so] if you’re not comfy then you’re probably going to be miserable.”
Ava Czerniak, an 8th grader in WMS, said “you have to be comfy in order to be engaged in your learning.”
Mrs.Rackett said she likes to be both, stating, “You can be stylish and comfortable at the same time.”
However, Johndel, an 8th grader, said that style is an important aspect of performing well, “If you look good then you feel good, and if you feel good you will do better in what you’re doing.”
SHOULD SCHOOL UNIFORMS BE IMPLEMENTED IN SCHOOLS?
Many schools have uniforms across the globe, mostly in private schools, but should they be in public schools and schools around the world?
Many people believe that school uniforms will lead to a more positive school environment. For example, Mr. McGuire said that “school uniforms should be a thing so no one can pick on each other for what they wear.”
Conversely, 8th grader Johndel Castio, discussed the importance of letting students have a say in what they wear, “I don’t think school uniforms should be a thing because people spend money on clothes and can’t even wear them to school.”
Many different people wear many different things to school on a daily basis. The importance of making sure students have the right to express themselves cannot be understated. 8th grader, Ava Czerniak, stated, “No, because that does not let students express their beliefs, differences, and feelings on their clothes, School uniforms don’t let students do that.
IS THERE A TIME WHEN THE DRESS CODE BRINGS OUT THE BEST OR WORST IN STUDENTS?
Students often don’t know what the dress code actually is; Czerniak stated the dress code brings out the worst in students because they “can get in trouble and it can bring their self-esteem down and makes the whole school worse if students are down.”
Mrs. Rackett also included that when there are spirit days and students get to break the dress code it makes “the school environment happier.”
She also added there are two sides to this story saying, “It’s all about how the student receives the news about the dress code. If we just talk to them I feel like they are less likely to break it again.”
