Run, Run, Run: Subway Surfers is back!
Jun 14, 2022
Imagine, you walk through the hallways of your school. You notice that not many kids are looking up or talking to each other, then you hear a student say : “Yes I just got 3 million!” to another student, you peek at someone’s phone and notice they’re playing a running game, and their score is ridiculously high.
Subway Surfers, a popular mobile game, was introduced to the public on May 23, 2012. Immediately it started to rocket in popularity. With the simple rules of the game it became a way to pass time for all ages. Today it celebrates its 10 year birthday and as of now is ranked as one of the top 10 most popular mobile games in the world. It paved the way for most mobile games and has been a part of many people’s childhoods.
Social media has a huge impact on society right now, trends are constantly rising and falling. Specifically one certain app, TikTok and weirdly enough the old beloved mobile game suddenly started to become a trending topic again. Crazy stories submitted with game play in the background, Challenges like the No Coins Challenge, and hacks. These played a huge part in Subway Surfers’ new found popularity.
WMS students shared some of their favorite aspects of the game. My sister, Seiry Collazo, loves to play this game in her spare time, Specifically in her room and during Science class. 8th Graders Kobe Henry and Kyria Lisojo both agree that the best time to play Subway Surfers is either when they’re bored or about to go to bed.
A certain Subway Surfers challenge is going around on TikTok called “The no Coins Challenge” . I asked WMS Subway Surfer players if they have ever attempted said challenge. Only 1 person said they have tried it and the rest said no but they are interested in trying it in the future. I have attempted this challenge but I didn’t get far.
Subway Surfers was, and arguably still is, a popular game that crashed into many people’s lives, it was the og running game and in my opinion is one of the best mobile games of all time. Happy 10 years to Subway Surfers!
