On April 12 1961 the first ever human in a space ship reached space. Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen, carried out the first human space flight.
This was during the space race between The Soviet Union and the US. The Space Race was a 20th-century competition between two Cold War adversaries, the Soviet Union and the United States, to achieve superior spaceflight capability.
