TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK: The WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball Team huddle together to discuss what needs to be done at the game.

With a final score of 12-21 in the third set, the WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball team falls short during the first game of the season.

Giavanna Polak, a 7th grader on the WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball team, comments “I think I can work on not using one hand while hitting, because it’s a reflex.” Polak’s position is a passer on the volleyball team. With the outcome of the first game, Polak states “it was only our first game, and most of us are inexperienced in the games.” Polak thinks the team can work on “communication, because if we don’t communicate, the team will fall”. For example, we can all “bump into each other”, and with communication, “we can prevent injuries and things like that”.

Cristina McNish, a 7th grader on the WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball team thinks she can improve on “listening to my team”, and communication. Everyone “struggles” with communication. McNish’s position on the volleyball team is center. McNish states “I feel good because for a lot of us, it was only our first game. We played with all that we had.” McNish says the team can work on “moving our feet, listening to our teammates, and talking more.”

SERVING UP THE GAME: Cristina McNish serves the ball.

Ms. Traschetti, one of the WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball coaches, thinks the team can work on “communication”, and they “need to be more observant”. Moving their feet is “another big one”, but overall, “just everything we’ve been practicing”.  Traschetti comments “I do not think the girls played to their full potential. There’s always room to grow. I know they could have played better.” Traschetti also adds “nobody likes to lose, but for the first game, they did very well. Besides Olivia Viggiano, it was everyone’s first game. I think their nerves got the best of them.”

Mr. Murphy, one of the WMS Lady Warriors Volleyball coaches, states “I feel that they can improve on not overthinking all the time. It makes them more nervous and you can see it on their face when they play.” Murphy thinks the team “kind of” came out “flat”. We had an on court advantage to the game. I felt that the girls were “nervous” and that is why “we lost”. But we will “improve”. Agreeing with Traschetti, Murphy comments “I don’t think they played to their full potential in the first game. They have a lot of talent and they should let that shine. Do I think they could have done better? Yes, I feel they could. And that is what we will be improving on over our practices.”
