The Hunger Games trilogy is one of the most popular series in the US. It is read in schools and for fun. The books are about the rich Capitol and their unfair treatment towards the poor Districts. Throughout the books a rebellion gets closer to happening making the books captivating.
In total there are three books in the original series and two prequels. Each of the prequels explains a different Hunger Games.
More are said to happen in the future but the author Suzanne Collins isn’t planning on making any sequels.
I personally liked all of the books but one. Here are my ratings.
The Hunger Games– The first book in the series set the future books up for success. It explained a lot about what it is like to live in the Districts and how people view the rich Capitol. While it explained a lot there were still unanswered questions to make the second book even better.
Final rating- 9/10
Catching Fire– Catching Fire was my favorite book in the original trilogy. There were so many amazing characters introduced and the plot twists were insane. I got to learn more about the past victors of the Hunger Games as well. Lots of stories were introduced and were left for closure in the third and final book of the original trilogy.
Final rating- 8/10
Mockingjay– This book made me cry but it was still a good closure to the original trilogy.. Some were left later to be answered in the prequels. I loved the epilogue and how it showed the main character Katniss finally felt at peace.
Final rating- 9/10
The first prequel Suzanne Collins came out with I didn’t like. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is about the evil President Snow. At the beginning he was a struggling person and later he just betrayed everyone. I find it creepy how he let his failed relationship from 64 years ago change his whole life. This book was as dry as the bread made from tesserae in District 12. I can’t make an official rating because I never finished it but if I could I would frate it a 0/10.
Unofficial final rating- 0/10
Sunrise on the Reaping– This book was about the mentor of Katniss and Peeta. Haymitch (the person whom the book is about) had lots of pieces missing from his puzzle. After reading this book I understood his life and the entire trilogy better. It was just as good as Catching Fire.
Final rating- 10/10
Many people say you need to read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to understand Sunrise on the Reaping. This is partially true. I only read 25% of the book and I understood Sunrise on the Reaping just fine. If you’re not a fan I recommend just looking up an overview of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes before reading the next prequel.
The three original books each have their own movie. They are book accurate but the directors left a couple important scenes out in each. There is also a movie for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that I haven’t watched.
There is a movie in the works for Sunrise on the Reaping. Some popular actors in the movie are Ralph Fiennes, the actor of Voldermort in the Harry Potter movies, as well as Maya Hawke, who plays Robin in Stranger Things.
All in all the trilogy and prequels were very good and interesting. I would recommend them to anyone looking to get into reading. Depending on how fast you read the series can keep you occupied for a long time.
