On the week of March 17th, a couple of teachers and students at WMS really helped to inform others about Women’s History Month.
In honor of Women’s History Month, every day on the morning announcements, there is a new woman featured. In the auditorium, there was a “Young Women Symposium” hosted by Ms. Acheson on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with several group activities and different sections teaching you about hygiene, self-respect, and more
Ms. Acheson, an assistance counselor at WMS, said “We all play a major role” when asked who she thinks played an important role in Women’s History Month. She also claimed that she “thinks [students] all have something to give to other people” and that they can “inspire each other with failures.”
Gisel Espinosa Kane, an 8th grader at WMS, talked about her plans for Women’s History.
She said, “We have stickers, bracelets, rings, necklaces, and earrings to give out. We also made quotes for some of the women we have chosen.”
She continued, discussing more about Ms. Acheson’s plans, “During the lunches we are going to have students come in and learn about hygiene, self-care, consent, and basically how to present yourself as a woman.”
Mr. O’Halloran encouraged young people to “keep an open mind” by “exposing themselves to different opportunities” so they could gain information.
Mr. Thomsen, a health/P.E teacher, said Women’s History Month is very important as a “husband and father of a daughter” to make them aware of all the good women have done throughout history. Mr. Thomsen mentioned that he thinks it’s important to “recognize it” and have “everyone do their part to honor and respect women’s history” as well.
