G & T students meet at Avenel Middle School every other Thursday morning.
Mia Muilenburg, an 8th grader in G&T, clarified why she wanted to be accepted in G&T, “I love writing and theater, and I love being on stage and acting. In 6th grade I wanted to do art but then I got really uninterested in art and then I joined Mr. Malmstrom’s 7th grade English class and in the beginning of the year for that class I loved it, and I recently figured out that I really like poetry.”
Muilenburg explained what students will have to know to join G&T. She said, “I don’t think there’s a lot that I can do because I can’t go into every class and say ‘join G&T!’, but I feel like our school could do a better job telling us there’s G&T because a lot of people don’t know how to do it and are thinking about it and considering it but it’s not in any presentations.”
Muilenburg put into words who students should talk to if they would like to be in G&T, “I personally spoke to my English teacher that year because I didn’t know who to speak to myself but I realize now you can just speak to your guidance counselor and they’ll get you paperwork if you’re eligible.”
G&T provides students with a great deal of freedom. For example, Muilenburg said, “In G&T we have a lot of freedom so i like that i think it’s nice because we do scripts but then we have the rest of the period to do whatever we want so i do like the freedom so i think that’s way different then a regular class so i like it because its calm and we all kind of do our own thing and hangout and its fun.”
