The following is a full transcript of an interview given by Nina Sadowski to Jaclyn Bruno and Radha Patel of The Warrior Messenger about her preferences as a cheerleader.
JACLYN BRUNO: What’s your name and your favorite thing about cheerleading?
NINA SADOWSKI: My name is Nina and my favorite thing about cheer is getting stronger and being able to lift people.
RADHA PATEL: What is your favorite position in cheer?
NS: My favorite position is probably a base because that’s what do but also I really want to be a flier.
JB: What is the closest game that you have won or lost?
NS: Probably the championships. I think we were about 1 or 2 points off at the end of the season but we lost. We worked really hard to get there though.
RP: Would you rather become a flier or a tumbler?
NS: Probably a flier because I can see the top of the bleachers and if I were a tumbler I would be afraid that I can like get paralyzed by like falling on my neck from doing a trick.
JB: Could you describe the difference between being a flier and a tumbler?
NS: We have a half time dance where we do in the middle of a game and we go into the middle of a field and do a dance and does tricks. A flier is where we’re in a stunt and 2 people hold your feet and there is someone behind you keeping you stable. The flier is basically on the top doing like a needle or standing on one foot.
RP: Would you rather stay on the same team as you are right now or go to the best team in the world but you have to leave your friends?
NS: That’s like 50-50 because I really want to improve my skills at cheerleading so I would really wanna be on a hire leveled skill team and competition. I also wouldn’t want to leave my friends so I would probably stay with my friends.
JB: If you could tell your younger self something about cheer what would it be?
NS: Never give up and even if you don’t get what you want, still try because you will get better at it.
RP: Why?
NS: Because in the beginning of when I started about like 2 years ago, I was always giving up on myself and I always thought I wasn’t good enough. Once I learned I could get better at cheer and I practiced, I realized that I actually can get better and I do have skills. I also realized that I was just getting in my head. I really just wanna make sure that I don’t get into my head for like games and competitions and things like that.
JB: How do you think you’ll do that?
NS: It’s really with the help of my teammates because I have really kind and supportive teammates on my team and they really help and my coaches are also really supportive. They help us with anything and a lot of people can find cheer coaches mean but they are really just supportive and they are just trying to help you position where you could accelerate and eventually be on like a college team.
RP: What is your favorite memory about cheering with your friends?
NS: My favorite memory is probably either my first game because that was really fun and that’s really where my love started for cheer or the pep rally and because a pep rally is basically before a season we do like a really fun halftime dance and we like listened to music and played with jump ropes and we ate food and talked to each other!
JB: Is there anything you would like to add?
NS: Never give up on yourself and keep moving forward!!
RP/JB: Thank you for your time!
