Valentina Chumpitaz’s Peruvian poem~
I am from stray dogs running in the streets
Sand rising in the air when taxis pass by
The smell of Afrojados fills the air
Laughter of kids wherever you go
I am from Empanadas that you could die for
Tres leches and torta de chocolate
Pollo a la Brasa and ceviche
Tallarines verdes y Lomo Saltado
I am from “Muchacha apurate que vamos a llegar tarde”
“Ya! Al toque, lava los platos”
“Cholita, baila con migo”
“Que tengas dulces sueños Hijita”
I am from the loving glances of my mother and father
The over – scented perfume hugs of Tia Rosi and Tia Patty
And the kisses from my Abuelita
