The following is a full transcript of the interview given by Mr. Blasena to Alyssa Linko of The Warrior Messenger about technology.
ALYSSA LINKO: What do you think is a good amount of time on the internet?
MR. BLASENA: Two hours a day.
AL: What do you think is a good time to start letting children use the internet?
JB: I mean the school gives it to you at kindergarten, so I would say 5 or 6 years old.
AL: What is so addicting about social media and how does it affect people?
JB: It’s what you like on social media, it’s almost like a body response. You like something and then you do it again and so then you keep scrolling. The problem with it is bullying, you can get physical effects. So there are some bad things about social media. But I think people like it because it makes them laugh.
AL: How does being on the internet affect people?
JB: Well as I said before, physical effects. It could make them weak, posture may be different, I think your social changes you forget how to communicate, writing is different. They talk with their fingers instead of a pen. Then they don’t know how to write because they use text to speak and speech to text. So I think there are some issues with that.
AL: What do you think is a good daily balance you can do?
JB: I think one hour online then riding your bike outside, so if you do two hours online then ride your bike for two hours. Or do something else instead of that.
AL: If you can change your habits about being online, what would you do?
JB: Well as a technology teacher, I use it a lot. So maybe teach another subject.
AL: Some ways to change your online life and real life are setting time limits, seeing your friends instead of calling, and having other activities to do. What do you think is the most important?
JB: Setting time limits. In a world like today you need technology. You can’t live without technology.
AL: What persuaded you into becoming a technology teacher?
JB: Well I was originally a history teacher, and then the school needed somebody else. Then the school picked me because I was the most [technological] person, then I started to like it.
AL: Thank you!
