1849- Elizabeth Blackwell Becomes the First Woman Doctor

Elizabeth Blackwell, originally from Bristol, England, came to the United States and attended Geneva College, now known as Hobart College. She ended up graduating highest in her class in 1489 and was granted an M.D. In 1857, she founded her own business, the New York Infirmary for Women and Children with her sister, Emily Blackwell who became a doctor in 1854. Blackwell returned to England, and in 1875 she became a professor of gynecology at the London School of Medicine for Women.
