1738- Ethan Allen is Born

Ethan Allen was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on January 21, 1738. As the oldest of seven children, he took over the family landholdings when his father died in 1755. In 1770, Allen became a landowner in the New Hampshire Grants and a colonel-commandant of the Green Mountain Boys, a militia in what is now Bennington, Vermont, to defend his homeland.

Allen and the Green Mountain Boys’ focus shifted to one thing: Independence from Britain. In 1774, they took down Fort Ticonderoga along with Colonel Benedict Arnold, the next day they took control of Crown Point. New York.

The Republic of Vermont was created in 1777 when Vermont officially announced their independence from Britain. But they couldn’t join the New Republic as a state be cause other states had already claimed that area. Frustrated Vermonters went to the Canadian Governor,  Frederick Haldimand, asking if they could rejoin the British Empire.

On February 12, 1789, Ethan Allen died on his farm along the Winooski River. Two years later, the Republic of Vermont officially became the 14 state of America.
