On December 9th, 2023, Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 10 year $700 million dollar contract. Ohtani came off another historic season with his previous team the Los Angeles Angels as he was arguably a Top 5 hitter and a Top 5 pitcher in 2023.
Ohtani batted .304 with league leading .412 On Base Percentage, .654 Slugging percentage, 184 OPS+, 44 Home Runs, in only 135 games. Pitching he went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA 167 Strikeouts in just 23 starts. Ohtani in the middle of the season tore his UCL leaving him out from pitching for 2024.
Ohtani’s contract does have a little bit of a catch to it. Ohtani will make $2 Million Dollars for the next 10 years, but after that’s over he will make $68 Million Dollars every year for another 10 years. So when Shohei Ohtani is 40-49 years old and most likely out of the league he will make $68 Million Dollars a year. Will Ohtani’s deal backfire against the Dodgers in the long run?
