Mrs Liastro and Mrs Douglas’ favorite time of the year is finally here! Cheer season at WMS has already begun, so here’s some news and a summary of what the 2023/24 WMS cheer season will bring.
Tryouts were on Oct. 16-19, where over 35 students tried out. Typically, Mrs. Liatro and Mrs. Douglas will take about 16 students to be a part of the WMS cheer team, but this year they took 20 due to the outstanding amount of talent shown at tryouts. Both coaches were really “looking for leadership, school spirit, confidence, lots of energy, and someone who really embodies what it means to be a Woodbridge Middle School student.”
The first practice was Tuesday, October 24th and the first basketball game will be on November 30th, where the WMS cheer squad will cheer on the Woodbridge Warrior basketball teams and hopefully lead them to victory.
They cheer through the entire basketball season up until the championships. After the games, the team is lucky enough to cheer at pep rallies and assemblies throughout the school year.
Coach Liastro and Douglas are planning on putting together a stunt clinic on Nov. 1st for their cheerleaders who are eager to learn more. This will cost $20 per cheerleader. WMS cheerleader Sam Morel said, “I’m really excited about it, and I think it’ll teach us stuff we know or might not know already.”
8th grade cheerleader Ashlynn Lynch said that she expects that they are going to be a lot better than last year, but she said, “I definitely think that there are going to be people that only want it for the title.”
Avery Carlson, a cheerleader at WMS, said, “I expect that it’s going to be really good and hopefully they win, and we get to go to the [championships].”
Woodbridge Middle School Cheerleader Sam Morel said she expects a lot of talent. “I know there’s a lot of talent coming out and especially people who are trying out again, who were on the team last year. I think they know what it feels like to be on the team, and if they make the team again I think it’s just going to be a safe and a happy environment.”
