November 22nd marked 59 years since the assassination of the 35th president of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in Dallas, Texas, by Lee Harvey Oswald.

On November 22nd, 1963, President Kennedy visited Dallas, Texas, as a way to gain support and votes for the election taking place the year after. He and his wife, former first lady Jackie Kennedy, joined a motorcade and rode around Texas. They entered Dealey Plaza at around 12:25 pm, just a few minutes before Kennedy was fatally shot.

The car was moving slowly due to the fact that the Plaza had a lot of turns. At 12:30 pm, tragedy struck. The President was first stuck in the throat and then the head. The second bullet also hit Governor John Connally in the back, who was seated in front of the President. They were immediately rushed to Parkland Memorial hospital. No matter what the doctors did, they couldn’t save him. Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1 pm. Fortunately, Governor Connally recovered.

The killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, was found not long after Kennedy died. On November 24th, 1963, just 2 days after the assassination, Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby while on his way to jail. Since Oswald died so early on in the investigation, his motive remains unknown. Kennedy’s funeral took place on November 25th, 1963.
