Heroes and Cool Kids inspire students at WMS
Students from Woodbridge High School came to WMS on November 30 to share their life stories and talk to the students about an inspirational program called Heroes and Cool Kids.
“The importance of Heroes and Cool Kids is to create a positive future for the students involved with the program either as mentors or mentees,” the program manager, Jesse Angatia, commented, “While searching for a way to give back, we heard about the Heroes and Cool Kids program. It is unique since the former professional athletes and accomplished individuals train the high school students (Heroes) to mentor elementary/middle school students (Cool Kids) in their district.” Angatia also said that the Heroes share about their lives and experiences with the students to help them make better, healthier choices that will lead to a positive future.
According to Angatia, there are requirements for being able to participate in the program, “The students are chosen by us based on their standout academic achievement, extracurricular participation, and mostly their character.”
Two Heroes from Woodbridge High School, Trevor and Jacklyn, were interviewed after talking to the students. Trevor had actually gone to WMS for middle school while Jacklyn went to Avenel Middle.
“I want to be a leader,” Trevor commented, “I want to be a role model.”
“It feels good to be looked up to,” Jacklyn added.
Both Heroes agreed that it’s better for the middle school students to hear from someone in their age group, rather than an adult. They also said that their favorite parts of being part of the program are “seeing the kids so excited” and “connecting with them on a friendship level”.
Two 6th grade students, Jeremy Reyes and Bertie Saintermy, who were visited by the Heroes were asked how they were inspired by the stories they heard that day.
“It was really cool,” Jeremy said. “They were saying things about what they did. I could relate to them.” He commented on how one of the Heroes played soccer, just like he does, and it motivated him to practice more.
Bertie thought the high schoolers were “really fun.” She said, “they inspired me to follow my dreams.”
The heroes’ stories have definitely inspired students to lead better lives and make better choices. We enjoyed their visit and can’t wait until they come again next year.
